Val Cavanagh grew up surrounded by songs.

“I’ve been actively playing music given that I was 14 in the Central New York region, and I personally felt like a bit of an outcast,” they said. “Like, there’s not lots of other people like me as a Black and queer artist myself.”
With the arrival of social media, younger Black and LGBTQ+ artists have greater accessibility to additional musicians of all backgrounds, but creative fields continue being dominated by white, cis-males, they reported. So they resolved to produce their own new music festival—Forevermore Fest, a blend among a road truthful and block social gathering that would celebrate marginalized artists.
That festival usually takes area subsequent Saturday, July 30, in East Syracuse.
“The plan commenced as me and my mates being like hey, it’d be super fun to just have a day in which we get to dangle out and perform audio all working day,” Cavanagh said. “Then we mentioned the thought much more and more and it kind of just snowballed into offering a platform to Black and queer artists all over the north east.”
The 26-calendar year-previous musician’s journey began in quality school, when they joined the marching band and picked up the clarinet. Close to that time, Cavanagh’s stepfather, a luthier—a craftsperson who builds and fixes stringed instruments—entered their existence, so instruments rested almost everywhere, ready to be plucked, strummed and mastered.
“I was always all-around musical instruments,” stated Cavanagh, who takes advantage of they/them/she/her pronouns. “I was in orchestra and any other audio endeavors throughout high faculty that I could be in.”
Their flavor in songs ranged from hardcore, to pop rock to pop songs, and they jumped from band to band, style to style, drawing inspiration from artists these as Julian Baker, A Wonderful Massive Pile of Leaves and Tyler the Creator. Nowadays, they concentration mostly on sound engineering and music production in several studios in Downtown Syracuse.
Forevermore Fest will aspect area expertise, as properly as bands and solo artists from the northeast area. Aside from new music, the party will have art suppliers offering their wares, food stuff trucks and a drag functionality.
With Forevermore Fest, Cavanagh hopes to not only highlight Black and LGBTQ+ artists, but also encourage aspiring creatives who are seeking for an individual like them accomplishing what they adore, just as Cavanagh after ideal.
“We exist,” Cavanagh explained. “And I just want people today to be able to truly feel harmless and to not only arrive out and get pleasure from a show, but also to go after a vocation in the arts, to demonstrate them that it’s attainable.”
